Probono – SLG Helps Achieve Stay of Execution for Randy Halprin

Randy Halprin was sentenced to die on October 10, 2019, for the death of police officer Aubrey Hawkins.  Years after Halprin was convicted and sentenced to death, family, friends and colleagues of the “judge” who presided over Halprin’s trial, Vic Cunningham, revealed that he is a life-long bigot and that he privately called Halprin (who is Jewish) a “kike” and a “dirty Jew” during the trial.  This “judge” also allegedly took special pride in convicting several of Halprin’s Latino co-defendants.  Marc Stanley and Martin Woodward helped draft and file a key Amicus Brief on behalf of 108 Texas Jewish lawyers, along with the American Jewish Committee, the Union for Reform Judaism, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and Men of Reform Judaism.  The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted the stay of execution and just days before the scheduled date sent the case back to the district court for further findings.

The appeal made national and world news.  2 local stories are below:
